BT has revealed details of its “next-generation” TV service, including a new-look for its YouView set top boxes, the addition of 20 live, major boxing matches per year to its sports line-up and the introduction of Dolby Atmos sound.
As trailed earlier this year by BT TV boss Delia Bushell, a software update will bring a new “image-rich” look to the platform which BT says will be “faster and slicker” and offer a “much more” intuitive user experience. The new look also includes improved signposting of on-demand content which will be easier for customers to find and enjoy.
As part of the software upgrade, BT Sport Ultra HD subscribers will be able to enjoy Dolby Atmos sound on selected events from across BT’s growing portfolio of sports.
In addition, an upgraded smartphone and tablet app will allow customers to manage recordings and stream live and on-demand programmes while on the move. Both the new set top box software and mobile app will be rolled out from early next year.
BT has also announced a new partnership with BoxNation which will see 20 World, European, British and Commonwealth title fights promoted by Frank Warren shown on BT Sport from early 2017. As part of the deal, the BoxNation channel will also be made available for free to existing and new BT Sport subscribers.
Delia Bushell, managing director of BT TV and BT Sport, said: “BT’s mission has always been to provide a high quality, premium TV service at prices that give unbeatable value to UK consumers. We will keep driving the pace of innovation in content, broadcasting and our customers’ experience.
“In 2017 we’re going to further shake up the market by releasing our new viewing experience across our TV guide and on demand, our new TV app and on our BT Sport channels, provided as a free upgrade for our customers.
“And our expanding list of sports rights will now include BoxNation and access to boxing world title bouts, all included in the price of the BT Sport subscription. We are taking the fight to our rivals in 2017 and we’ll be in great shape.”
Frank Warren, Chairman of BoxNation, said: “I’m delighted that I have signed a deal to bring boxing to BT Sport.
“This is the beginning of a new era for the sport in this country and I am delighted to be working exclusively with a broadcast and telecommunications powerhouse in BT.
Iconic fight nights have the ability capture the imagination of the public, and I am looking forward to building some fantastic events with BT Sport.
“This long-term deal will give BT Sport customers access to BoxNation and my talented stable of fighters and we are delighted to be giving BoxNation, a channel we have worked so hard to build, the vast distribution it deserves.”
