April 23, 2015 by Staff

baku_2015_620BT Sport has secured the exclusive UK broadcast rights to the inaugural European Games which take place in Baku, Azerbaijan this June.

The 17 day event (12-28 June) will see athletes from 50 nations compete across 20 sports, including boxing, cycling and diving, for the chance to win a gold medal.

Team GB will send 153 athletes, including London 2012 team members Nicola Adams, Gemma Gibbons and Jade Jones, to compete in 13 different sports.

The deal with BT Sport follows the signing of broadcast partners in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Latin America and several other European countries.

BT says it’ll provide daily coverage of the games both on its BT Sport TV channels as well as its app and website which are free to the firm’s broadband customers.

Simon Clegg, Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015, said: “The fit between BT Sport and the European Games is perfect.

“BT Sport have burst onto the British broadcasting scene, and Baku 2015 is the most significant event to join the European sporting calendar in half a century.

“BT Sport has already proven the high level of their programming through their coverage of the English Premier League, and their ambition is shown by having secured the rights to the UEFA Champions League from next season.

“We are delighted that they have become the latest leading network to ensure the broadcast of the first ever European Games.”
